Fungus Rock, known in Maltese as Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral, is a dramatic limestone islet standing at the mouth of Dwejra Bay in Gozo. Rising steeply from the sea, it was once famous for the rare “Maltese fungus” (actually a parasitic plant) that the Knights of St John believed had powerful medicinal properties. The Knights guarded the rock heavily and imposing strict penalties for trespassing. Today, Fungus Rock is a striking natural landmark and a protected nature reserve, admired for its rugged beauty and ecological importance.
